In the early hours of Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 07:52 am, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Williamsburg Fire Department, Richmond Fire Department drone team, and Reid Health Medics, swiftly responded to a reported collision at the intersection of US 35 and Davis Meyers Road.
The incident involved a passenger car and a semi-truck, with the preliminary investigation revealing that thirty-five-year-old Carolyn Legg of Muncie, operating a 2011 Honda Accord, was traveling southbound on US 35 east of Davis Meyers Road. As she navigated a long sweeping right-hand curve, Ms. Legg inexplicably veered left of center, colliding with a tri-axle dump truck, who was northbound on US 35 hauling feed for Reynolds Service Tech, Inc. out of Richmond. The dump truck driver sustained injuries and was promptly transported to Reid Hospital for treatment and a mandatory toxicology screen per state statute.
Tragically, Ms. Legg succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The Wayne County Coroner conducted an on-site investigation before removing her from the scene.
Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that sun glare and use of an electronic device may have been contributing factors to the collision.
During the investigative process, US 35 was temporarily closed, ensuring a thorough examination of the scene. The road was reopened for traffic at about 12:00 pm the same day.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Carolyn Legg during this difficult time. Further details may be provided as the investigation progresses.
A special thanks to the Williamsburg Fire Department, Richmond Fire Department drone team, Reid Health Medics, and the Wayne County Emergency Communications Department for their help navigating this tragic incident.
