Each year, Cope Environmental Center recognizes individuals and organizations whose passion, leadership, and commitment have made a lasting impact on our mission. These awards celebrate those who inspire others through environmental stewardship, volunteerism, and community partnership. We are proud to honor our 2026 award recipients.
Jim & Helen Cope Sustainability Award – Penny Ausmus
The Jim & Helen Cope Sustainability Award honors an individual whose dedication and vision reflect the values of Jim and Helen Cope through a lifelong commitment to sustainability.
Penny Ausmus has spent decades inspiring others to care for our planet. From leading the Centerville Green Club and launching workplace recycling programs to opening the East Central Indiana Recycling & Reuse Hub, her passion for sustainability has created a lasting impact across our community. Penny’s connection to Cope runs deep, from helping fund our solar panels to organizing the bottle cap collection that became part of our Living Building. Her lifelong leadership continues to inspire future generations to protect the environment.
Excellence in Partnership Award – Indiana Audubon
The Excellence in Partnership Award recognizes an organization whose collaboration has strengthened Cope Environmental Center’s mission through conservation, education, and community engagement. Indiana Audubon has become an invaluable partner by working alongside Cope to connect more people with birds, wildlife, and nature. Together we’ve expanded programs like Birdathon and the Hummingbird Migration Celebration while providing educational resources, volunteer opportunities, and conservation initiatives that benefit our entire community. Their shared commitment to environmental stewardship continues to strengthen our mission and inspire future generations.
Volunteer of the Year Award – Marcia Stiens
The Volunteer of the Year Award honors an individual whose generosity, dedication, and willingness to serve have made an extraordinary impact on Cope Environmental Center.
Since joining Cope’s Board of Directors in 2022, Marcia has become a familiar face at countless events, workdays, and volunteer projects. Whether helping with our gala, Family Maple Syrup Day, Fall Foliage 5K/10K, Cope Crew projects, or representing Cope throughout the community, she is always ready to lend a helping hand. Her enthusiasm, kindness, and unwavering commitment have strengthened Cope and helped ensure our mission continues to thrive.
Business Sustainability Award – Hill’s Pet Nutrition
The Business Sustainability Award recognizes a business that demonstrates outstanding leadership in environmental stewardship through its operations, corporate values, and community impact. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has made sustainability a cornerstone of its mission by investing in energy and water efficiency, reducing waste, and expanding the use of recyclable packaging across its operations. Beyond its environmental efforts, Hill’s supports communities around the world through disaster relief, volunteer service, and initiatives that improve the lives of both pets and people. Their commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable future makes them a deserving recipient of Cope Environmental Center’s 2026 Business Sustainability Award.
Please join us in congratulating Penny Ausmus, Indiana Audubon, Marcia Stiens, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition on these well-deserved honors. We look forward to celebrating these incredible recipients at The Great Outdoors: A Night in the Wild!
