As the year winds down, December brings a peaceful stillness to Cope’s trails and woodlands. Frost-kissed mornings, crisp air, and quiet landscapes offer the perfect setting to reflect, unwind, and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re joining a winter program, exploring with family, or simply enjoying a serene walk, Cope invites you to celebrate the beauty and calm of the season.

Help Curiosity Thrive this Giving Tuesday
|
We are deeply grateful for the community that makes Cope Environmental Center’s mission possible. Every gift helps children, adults, and seniors reconnect with nature-whether through hands-on field trips, outreach to senior living centers, or peaceful moments on our free public trails. Your support brings learning to life, from discovering salamanders on the trail to meeting our animal ambassadors up close. As you consider your year-end giving, please help us continue creating meaningful moments that inspire curiosity, stewardship, and a love for the natural world. Thank you for ensuring CEC remains a place where discovery thrives.

Cope Environmental Center is home to a remarkable collection of conifer trees, planted by Jim Cope and sourced from many regions across the globe. These trees aren’t just beautiful, they provide ideal habitat for winter finches migrating south from Canada. With poor cone crops in the boreal forest this year, species like Purple Finches, Redpolls, Pine Siskins, and Evening Grosbeaks are expected to appear in Indiana in high numbers. Sightings have already begun on Cope’s property. Visitors are encouraged to explore Jim’s Conifer Trail, prairie edges, and the feeders for the best chance of spotting these birds. It’s a wonderful season to experience the magic of northern finches up close.
