Each year, Cope Environmental Center honors individuals whose dedication, leadership, and generosity have left a lasting mark on our mission. We are proud to present the 2025 award recipients:
Francis Parks Award – Thomas Hill
Named for Francis Parks, whose vision helped shape Cope’s beauty, this award recognizes exceptional care of our property. Thomas Hill, our Facilities & Grounds Chair since 2022, has used his expertise in GIS and drone technology to improve mapping, accessibility, and the visitor experience. A lifelong lover of nature, Thomas has strong family ties to Cope and often volunteers at events and workdays. His thoughtful leadership makes Cope more welcoming for all.
Jim & Helen Cope Award – Jalen Sleet
This award honors visionary leadership in sustainability. Since 2019, Jalen has led efforts to restore and protect local habitats-removing invasive species, planting over 2,000 native trees, and teaching others the skills to care for the land. As manager of the Earlham Nature Reserve System, he cares for more than 200 acres of protected habitat and serves on multiple conservation committees. His work at Cope includes guided hikes, land stewardship, and collaborative education programs.
Volunteer of the Year – Pam Merchanthouse
This award celebrates extraordinary volunteerism. Pam first connected with Cope in 2011 and has since served as Board Chair, Marketing Chair, and a member of several key committees. She has helped shape galas, supported fundraising campaigns like Birdathon, and pitched in at plantings, workdays, and events. Always encouraging and generous, Pam has strengthened Cope both behind the scenes and in the spotlight.
Business Sustainability Award – 3Rivers Credit Union
This award honors businesses that lead with sustainability and community impact. 3Rivers has been a longtime supporter of Cope, serving as the presenting sponsor of Birdathon, partnering on property projects through community volunteering, and sharing leadership with a 3Rivers team member on our Board of Directors. Their commitment extends beyond Cope through LEED-certified facilities, recycling programs, a staff-led community garden, and support for other conservation organizations. By weaving sustainability into both operations and partnerships, 3Rivers inspires others to make choices that protect our natural world.
Please join us in congratulating Thomas, Jalen, Pam and 3Rivers for their outstanding contributions to Cope Environmental Center. We hope you can help us celebrate these incredible individuals and business as we honor their achievements together.
