At approximately 9:35 PM on December 13, 2023, Wayne County Sheriff’s Officers were dispatched to the 145 Mile Marker of Eastbound I-70 regarding a motor vehicle accident involving two semi-tractor-trailers, with one potentially overturned and unknown injuries.
Upon arrival, officers found an inverted blue Freightliner semi, transporting food products, with substantial damage to the cab and trailer. Another white Freightliner semi, hauling furniture, sustained significant damage to the trailer. Occupants from both vehicles were assessed by Reid EMS and released at the scene.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the white Freightliner was in the right-hand lane when, for unknown reasons, the blue Freightliner collided with its trailer. The impact pushed the white Freightliner into the left-hand lane, leaving the trailer axle obstructing the driving lane. The blue Freightliner, propelled past the white Freightliner, went off the roadway into the grass median, overturning and causing a diesel fuel leak across the roadway and median.
Both eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed from the time of the crash until approximately 2:45 AM. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) was engaged to reroute traffic onto State Road 1, resulting in a substantial backup between the Centerville Road and State Road 1 exits.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office extends gratitude to Wayne County Dispatch, Wayne County Emergency Management Agency, Centerville Fire, Centerville Police, Reid EMS, and INDOT for their collaborative efforts in managing this incident.
This crash is still under investigation. The information provided above is based on preliminary observations of officers on scene.
